Halloween in July tonight at the Grand Midway’s Shangri-La Coffeehouse. Hot as hell tonight, but tonight’s coffees are Pumpkin Spice and Starbucks regular. And it’s all horror movies–all night long! The first movie? The Haunting in Connecticut– a low-budget effort from 2009. But Blair didn’t seem that happy with it and quickly went to the Jeff […]Read more "July 21 at the Grand Midway"
Pegasus Descending by James Lee Burke, crime/mystery novel, 2006. I really like James Lee Burke’s work. His crime novels are always filled with interesting, complex and three-dimensional characters, and great atmosphere/vividly realized settings. He can be by turns sweet and lyrical, sardonically amusing, and brutally honest–not to mention honestly brutal. I’ve just read this, one […]Read more "REVIEW: Pegasus Descending"
For the coffeehouse’s 3rd movie of the evening, Blair went off the (intentional) comedy theme with 300. Attendance was pretty thin tonight (owing to the hot humid temps, no doubt), mostly regulars. A steamy night at the Grand Midway, so instead of hot coffee I’ve snagged a tall can of Arizona Fruit Punch juice cocktail to start with. First movie: Fast Times at Ridgemont High. If anybody’s crazy enough to want HOT drinks tonight, there’s Vanilla Hazlenut and Starbucks Regular Coffees, as well as hot water for various […]Read more "July 14 at the Grand Midway"

After the Munster episode marathon, Blair did a major change of pace with the crime movie Smokin’ Aces. Before sundown, a couple youngsters engaged in a spirited nurf-gun duel in the park outside and Ed walked his dog (while a few of Windber’s allegedly ‘wild’ rabbits frolicked uncaring nearby). Several newcomers came in tonight and several people […]Read more "July 7, 2016, Part 2"
Tonight’s Shangri-La Coffee Lounge got underway with multiple DVD episodes of The Munsters playing, Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts coffee brewing, and somebody (okay, yours truly) bringing in a batch of wild-picked fresh raspberries for the denizens of our favorite haunted hotel to enjoy. Oh, and here’s yet another still shot from the Zombie Dream movie–filmed here (and at numerous […]Read more "July 7, 2016 at the Grand Midway"
